Protection of the Environment in Processing

At A-1, all material handling, processing, storage and packaging occurs indoors, protecting against releases into air and stormwater.  Dust is collected as it rises, and is immediately returned to its parent material.  Processing is dry, so no process waste water is generated.

A-1's goal is to recycle to the maximum amount possible.  Of course, the primary business is the recycling of salvage automotive converters.  But A-1 also recycles sheared stainless and carbon steels, shipping them to steel mills for recycling into new steel; wooden pallets, which are reused or recycled into wood product; and cardboard boxes, which are recycled into fiber.

A-1's processed catalyst output is shipped in sealed containers to world-class PGM smelting/refining facilities in Canada and South Africa.  Like A-1, these facilities are certified for environmental management under ISO 14001.  Smelting dust and fumes are captured and returned to process. Final smelter waste is sequestered in insoluble slag and disposed in an environmentally compatible manner.  At the refineries, processing is closed circuit. These facilities are carefully maintained and updated so as to retain state-of-the-art status.

The Importance of Platinum Group Metals Recycling

Environment

Recycling should be an integral part of the lifecycle of all materials, and because platinum group metals (PGMs) have a high value and are resistant to chemical attack, a significant proportion of them are in fact recycled, thereby conserving this precious resource.
